Laos, umgeben von China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand und Kambodscha, ist so groß wie England, hat aber so wenig Einwohner wie die Schweiz. Die Natur ist wunderschöne und die Menschen sind überaus hilfsbereit und freundlich, aber, 1/3 der Bevölkerung lebt immer noch in Armut von weniger als 1 Euro pro Tag. Laos ist eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt.
Mein norwegischer Urgroßvater war einer der ersten Europäer, die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts den Mekong hinauf nach Laos reisten. Seine Tochter, meine Großmutter, war Laotin, geboren in der Hauptstadt Vientiane.
Mit diesen Wurzeln reiste ich schon 1969 als junges Mädchen zum ersten Mal in das Land meiner Vorfahren und gelobte, eines Tages zurückzukehren um “zurückzugeben“.
Erst später im Leben konnte ich diesen Traum erfüllen. Seit 10 Jahren bin ich regelmäßig in Laos und betreibe dort meine vielfältigen Hilfsprojekte. Ich kenne das Land und die Leute sehr gut vor allem durch meine Arbeit mit lokalen Handwerkern, Hotels, NGOs, Schulen und Krankenhäusern. Im Vorstand der Organisation “Legacies of War” habe ich die grausamen Folgen des Vietnamkrieges kennengelernt und durfte auch mit Botschaftern und Regierungsvertretern zusammenarbeiten.
Kolonisation, Kriege, Tourismus und die aktuelle Pandemie haben einen großen, überwiegend negativen Einfluss auf die Entwicklung dieses Dritte-Welt-Landes. Ich bin fest davon überzeugt, dass man diesem Land am besten durch Bildung helfen kann. Das laotische Volk muss lernen, in sich selbst und in seine Kinder (NextGen) zu investieren, um das Land aufzubauen.
Um den Kreis zu schließen, hoffe ich, dass ich mit diesem Verein etwas bewirken kann.

It has beautiful nature, the people are extremely friendly but the population is young and poor. 1/3 of the population still lives on less than € 1 a day. That said, Laos remains one of the poorest countries in the world.
My Norwegian great-grandfather was one of the first European traders to travel up the Mekong into Laos at the end of the 19th century. My grandmother, was lao, born in the capital city, Vientiane.
With these roots, as a young girl in 1969, the first time in the country, I felt my ties and vowed to one day return to the country of my ancestors to “give back.”
It wasn’t until later in life that I was able to fulfill my vow and was able to return to Laos.
For 10 years, I have been regularily in country to run my diverse projects. I know the country and the people very well, especially through my work with local craftsmen, hotels, NGOs, schools and hospitals. On the board of the organisation “Legacies of War”, I have gotten to know the consequences of the Vietnam War and been able to work with ambassadors and government representatives.
Colonization, wars, tourism and the current pandemic have all major, predominantly negative influence on the development of this third world country. I firmly beleive that the best way to help is through education. The Lao people must learn to invest in themselves and in their children (NextGen) to build their country.
Now, completeing the circle, with NextGen Laos e.V., I hope to make a difference.
